Susan asks…

How much is it for Blue Cross Blue shield health insurance (family plan) per month if you buy it on your own??

I want to work for myself but the cost of supporting my own health insurance for myself, wife and child is a big factor in my decision.

There are too many variables to answer your question. Each insurance company will have a number of different plans. The plans with all companies will vary by state and the premium will vary by zip code or county.

The premium will also vary by your ages, current health conditions, and your height and weight. It will vary by whether you want and HMO, PPO, or an indemnity policy. It will vary depending upon your deductible and if you want maternity. It will also vary by how comprehensive is the policy.

Visit a local independent agent. The agent can help you find the best policy for your situation and budget. The agent can also compare the BCBS policies with other companies in your area and can make sure your doctor will accept the plan you decide upon. The plans and premiums are exactly the same whether you use an agent or not.

Ring up the local LIC office and ask them to send one of their agents to you. You will get better and complete information from such a person.

Graham asks…

family health insurance plan for 19yr old, 17yr, and few day old baby? Need it to marry.?

My fiance and I want to get married right away and have been wanting to for a while but had to wait until the insurance plan he had at his job kicked in. That would have been next month but now he is getting another job and going back to college next semester so we won’t have that insurance. I can’t marry him until we have the insurance thing figured out because I won’t be covered under my parents’ once we are wed and they won’t let us till this is done. This is more urgent than ever that we get married now because my parents are driving us mad trying to control everything. I just gave birth to our baby girl on Tuesday so we need to find a good family plan. If you have any advice on what insurance carriers have good, hopefully inexpensive coverage please share. Oh and we are all in great health so existing health conditions won’t be a factor in finding insurance. And the state is VA.

You may not be able to get a family plan right now.

First of all, most insurers for privately purchased plans will require the infant to be at least 8 weeks old befor they will be covered. And they have to pass a medical exam. (The only way you can generally add an infant to a plan immediately is if you already had the plan in effect, or if its a group plan through an employer.)

I tried plugging your information into ehealthinsurance.com and there were zero plans you were eligible for. Every plan either had a stipulation that the spouse had to be older than 17 and/or that the infant had to be at least 8 weeks old.

Perhaps your fiance should have considered these factors *before* he left the job that would have provided insurance to him. At least he could have added the baby, if not you. (Once you become a parent and a husband/wife, you have to start looking at the big picture…your actions don’t just affect yourself anymore.)

Even if you could find a plan that would allow you as a 17 year old spouse and to enroll an infant younger than six weeks, the premium is likely to be $500 a month or even more. Health insurance is not cheap. If there is any way that your fiance can get group coverage through an employer, that would be your best bet.

Richard asks…

In California, are you required to have health insurance for your child if your job offers family insurance?

1. In California, are you required to have health insurance for your child if your job offers family health insurance (medical, dental and vision) for you and your child?
2. does the court require you to sign up your child through your workplace’s health insurance (family plan)?

note: I am a noncustodial parent
2. If your job offers family health insurance (dental, medical, and vision), does the court require the noncustodial parent to have their child on their workplace’s health insurance (family plan)?

admin answers:

Depends on your custody arrangement via the court order

but seriously, why wouldn’t you list your children?

Mandy asks…

Can anyone give me advice on how to get a family health insurance plan?

My husband is starting his own business and we will need to purchase an insurance policy for our family. When I started calling around, I am an automatic denial because I have Multiple Sclerosis. Does anyone have any advice as to how to find a policy to cover us? Thank you

admin answers:

Don’t get a discount plan…PERIOD. It’s not insurance and having an Amway type company responsible for your health care is ridiculous.

Find a broker that does business in your state as MS is going to need to go through a high risk pool.
